America Is Under Attack: September 11, 2001: The Day the Towers Fell by Don Brown

Non-fiction/Informational, Picture Book
Summary- This book is about the events that occurred in NYC on September 11th, 2001. These events changed the world forever and this book explains everything that happened in a way that young readers can understand better. It discusses about the morning the plane crashed, from the hijackings at the World Trade Center and Pentagon, and all the way to the collapse of the buildings.
The water color images make this book very real and show what really happened on this terrible day.

Martin's Big Words: The Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by Doreen Rappaport

Non-Fiction/Informational, Picture Book
Summary- This book is about Dr. Martin Luther King who was a civil rights activist. This book talks about his childhood and about how he lived through seeing "white only" signs all around his neighborhood. Talks about his journey and leadership through the civil rights movement. It also discusses his assassination and how devastating and unfair it was.
Great way to include this part of history in your classroom. Very Informational!

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs by Judi Barrett

Fantasy, Picture Book
Summary- A grandfather tells his grandchildren about a faraway town called Chewandswallow. In this town the residents don't need to buy food because it all came from the sky. It would rain soup, snow mashed potatoes and even storm hamburgers. One day things got bad and the food amount that came down was way too much. Eventually everyone decided to move their location and used stale bread and peanut butter to make rafts and they sailed to another land where it was normal and they had to buy their own meals.
Very creative and humorous story. You could talk about nutrition with the student's or even about weather!

The Night Before Christmas by Mary Engelbreit

Poetry, Picture Book
Summary- This poem is a classic and there are many different versions of this. The one I read had elves and Santa Clause and wonderful images. Santa leaves candy and toys to all the children in their cozy homes. This book is a rhyming book and a great way to celebrate the holiday with your class!
Classic Poem, a must read in the classroom!

Corduroy by Don Freeman

Summary- Corduroy is a little brown bear who is waiting on the shelf for someone to buy him.Corduroy knows no one wants to buy him because he lost a button and he goes searching for it one night.  A little girl named Lisa uses her own money from her piggy bank and buys him and sews a new button on him and they are happy they have one another.
Very cute story, shows that even though something may not look special it could be special to someone else.

If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laurie Joffe Numeroff

Fantasy, Picture Book
Summary- This book is about a little boy who gives a mouse a cookie and shouldn't have. The mouse now gives him many requests and the boy becomes exhausted.
This book makes the children laugh because they know that mice can't talk and give orders like this. 

Chika Chika ABC by Bill Matin Jr. and John Archambault

Alphabet, Picture Book
Summary- This book is very colorful and vibrant for young readers to get engaged. This is for very very young readers. This is a rhyming story that parents can read to their infants so they can memorize the ABC's. All the letters climb to the top of the coconut tree but then "chicka chicka boom" and they all fall down.
Very cute story for young infants!

Get Ready for Gabí: Please Don't Go by Marisa Montes

Multicultural, Picture Book
Summary- This story is about a little girl named Gabi who doesn't want her grandmother to go back to Puerto Rico and wants her to stay with her because she loves when she visits. Gabi teaches her grandmother how to speak English and even signs them up for kickboxing classes. The grandmother does decide to stay at then end and makes Gabi so happy!

Harold and the Purple Crayon by Crockett Johnson

Fantasy, Picture Book
Summary- This book is very creative when a little boy named Harold uses his magical crayon to create wonderful adventures for himself.
Classic book, very entertaining!

The Patchwork Path by Bettye Stroud

Historical Fiction, Picture Books
Summary- This book is about a young slave girl names Hannah on the southern plantation. Her and her father run for freedom and she brings along a quilt that her mother helped her make before she passed away. The patterns on the quilt are what guide them to freedom through the Underground Railroad.
Great way to introduce the Underground Railroad to your class.

Summary- This is a story for very young readers that is about little puppies who can fly planes. They go on adventures in these planes and fly all over. They make the reader's get engaged with the great pictures and excitement throughout the story.

The Ocean Alphabet Book by Jerry Pallotta

Alphabet, Picture Book
Summary- This book teaches the alphabet but the theme is the ocean. It teaches words like Octopus for the letter"o" and the pictures are amazing. Children love the ocean life and cannot wait to learn more words.

The Constuction Alphabet Book by Jerry Palotta

Summary- This is a humorous book about all the construction workers and tools which teaches you about the alphabet and has great images to help the reader learn.Rock crushers, jackhammers, and wrecking balls help make this book engaging for young readers.
Great way to teach the alphabet to young readers.

Summary- This book is an alphabet book that teaches about words in English and Spanish. It talks about how a Spanish friend shows an English friend around their neighborhood and they see how different things are.
Great way to show different cultures by learning the alphabet at the same time!

Frida by Jonah Winter

Multicultural, Picture Book
Summary-This is a book about an artist named Viva Frida and it tells about her life and how when her mother was too busy taking care of all her sisters her father taught her how to paint. Even though she had polio and was in a car accident, painting was the only thing that kept her going.
Theme- If you believe in it, you can do it!

Coming on Home Soon by Jacqueline Woodson

Summary- This story talks about a black woman who has a job opportunity in Chicago. Her daughter and mother stay at home with a cat they find and keep each other company as they wait for letters in the mails from the mother. Finally they get a letter that says she will be coming home soon and she sends money with. This shows that no matter what the circumstance may be you have to push through to make things better.

Mapping Penny's World by Lorren Leedy

Informational/Realistic Fiction, Picture Book
Summary- This book is about a class who works on creating maps in class and they use their maps in the real world. For example it can show how maps give people direction. The class made maps of many things and the kids also learn about measuring. The main character makes a treasure map of her cat's things.
The children in your classroom could do a similar activity to work on creating maps.

The Scramble States of America by Laurie Keller

Informational/Historical Fiction, Picture Book
Summary- All the states were bored in their original location and wanted to be next to different states. They move their location and make the United States all jumbled up. This book has great facts about the states which include weather, resources, and other important information. The states realize they like it better when they are in the correct spot because some don't like the weather changes and others don't like their new neighbors.
Cute Story!

Birds by Kevin Henkes

Informational, Picture Book
Summary- This book talks about how birds can be all different colors, sizes, and shapes. It discusses how birds are everywhere you look and how you can see them all the time outside. The pictures in this book are very bright and colorful.
Good way to introduce birds in a science lesson by reading a short picture book to your class.

I Have a Sister My Sister is Deaf by Jeanne Whitehouse Peterson

Contemporary Realistic Fiction, Picture Book
Summary- A littler girl talks about how special her sister is to her and how she is just like everyone else but is deaf. She can play the piano but cannot hear the sound, she feels it. She can do all the things that non-deaf children do. They use sign language in the story and the young girl is learning how to speak and read lips.
Great way to discuss this issue in your classroom by reading this book!

A Picture Book of Harriet Tubman by David A. Alder

Informational/Diversity, Picture Book
Summary This book is a biography of Harriet Tubman. It talks about her childhood, her family, and how Harriet hated slavery. She talked about how terrible it was and all the things she had to go through. In the back of the book it had many important historical events.
Good source for a children's book when discussing slavery in the classroom.

Historical/Informational Fiction, Picture Book
Summary- This story talks about how the Declaration of Independence came to be. It has facts about the Revolutionary War, July 4th and other memorable events that occurred during this time period.
Great way to tie in a book with a social studies lesson.

Summary- Prince Cinders was a skinny and scruffy looking boy who wanted to be big and hairy like his brothers because they were "cool". Prince Cinders was always at home doing everyone chores and while his brother's were out having fun. He didn't think he could go to the ball because he had too much work to do but when his fairy God mother turns him into a big, hairy boy he doesn't even fit in the ball. He meets a pretty princess at the bus stop and she likes him for him not the big hairy guy.
Theme- It doesn't matter what you look like, it matters what's inside.

Hooweay For Wodney Wat by Helen Lester

Summary- A rat named Rodney can't pronounce his R's and the other rats at his school make fun of him. He didn't talk to the other kids. He was upset because they hurt his feelings because they made fun of the way he spoke. A new rat came to school whose name was Camilla Capybara and she was very smart and perfect. The only thing was, was that she was a bully. Toward the end of the story the other rats began to like Rodney and dislike Camilla because she is so mean and thinks she is the best. Camilla couldn't understand anything Rodney said and the other children could. Now Rodney was the hero!
Theme-Just because your smaller doesn't mean you can't overcome the bully!

How Do Dinosaurs Go to School? by Jane Yolen and Mark Teague

Summary- Throughout the whole story the reader is asked about what a dinosaur does at school. In almost all the pictures it shows dinosaurs acting out and all the different things that children thought they would do but in the end, the reality is that dinosaurs would behave in school and stop the bullies and be a good student.
Theme-Don't judge a book by its cover.

Firehouse by Mark Teague

Summary- Edward wants to be a firefighter. Judy and him visit a real firehouse and learn all about the jobs of firefighter's. A woman named Mrs. Speckle teaches them. A real emergency happens while they are there and Edward ends up saving a kitten from a tree.
Theme- You can achieve your dreams if you just try!

Summary- This family has a picnic in Battery Park every year. This is because that's what their grandmother would want them to do. They visit grandma and grandpa, uncle Joe, aunt Loise, and their cousins Rosa and Mike.
This story shows how it's nice to have family traditions to keep everyone close.

Summary- A family goes to the same tree every year on Christmas Eve and decorate it. Nina is the main characters sister and she loves attention. They have a picnic by the tree and sing Christmas carols as a family. The little boy thinks the animals all sing around the tree, just like they do.

Summary- This book teachers about the body parts in a literal way. For example "cracking up or giving a hand" they actually had pictures of a person cracking into pieces or a hand actually handing a hand to someone.
These images are humorous for young children!

Summary- A little girl collects change and puts it in a jar. She is saving for a chair. The old chair got burnt in a fire and she tells about the day the fire happened. Everyone helped their family and donated things. They saved up enough money to buy the chair.
Good way to bring up incidents like this in your classroom.

Summary- Spencer had so many toys, they were everywhere! For some reason everyone always gives him toys and he keeps all of them forever. It was making things hard to do around the house so his mom told him he had to get rid of some. He didn't want to get rid of any and he started bargaining with his mom.Then he decided he just wanted a cardboard box and everything else could go!

Summary- This is what really happened to little red riding hood from the wolf's perspective. The wolf did chores for the grandmother and he talks to the reader and tries to get them to come close and closer. The grandma and little red ignored the wolf so he warned grandma that little red was bringing toffee that would run her teeth. Grandma bumped her head and fell in the wardrobe. So the wolf put on her clothes and waited for little red and got in her bed and waited. Wolf got mad when she was trying to feed him toffee because it got stuck in his teeth. A woodsman came in a chased the worlf out of the house.

Summary- Colin the Cobbler was a shoemaker who sold to the rich and the poor. One day "Death" arrived at his door and said he came for his soul. This is how Goldilocks has the house to herself in the original story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
Pop-up books are engaging!

Miss Malarkey Leaves No Reader Behind by Finchler and O'Malley

Summary-The school is doing a reading program where they have to read 1,000 books. The main character hates to read and loves doing other things. Miss Malarkey finds him a perfect book and he reads the whole thing. He decides to stop playing video games for once and enjoys this book. He read the 1,001 book for the reading program, and was happy anyway.

Personal Space Camp by Julia Cook

Realistic Fiction, Picture Book
Summary- A little boy is always in everyone's face so he gets sent to the principal's office and he learns that everyone does need space. The principal makes him get in a hula hoop with many other children and he doesn't like it at all.
Bring this in the classroom if children are having the same issue, humorous book.

The Neighborhood Mother Goose by Nina Crews

Traditional Literature, Picture Book
Summary- This is a book of rhymes and the pictures are all from around the neighborhood. Actual photographs of people and it relates to the rhymes. The pictures are created to go with a rhyme from traditional rhymes for example, "Jack jumps over the candlestick". They have a little boy actually jumping over a candle on a cupcake. He looks as if they used Photoshop to change the pictures and make them fun.(humorous)

Walter the Baker by Eric Carle

Summary- Walter was the best baker around town and he would wake up early to bake all kinds of goodies. Anna, his wife, would sell all the baked goods at their store. The Duke and Duchess even loved his sweet rolls. Their son would carry the rolls to their castle to deliver them in person. One day the milk spilled and Walter had to use water instead and hoped that no one would notice the difference. The Duke and Duchess noticed and were very upset. They told him he had one more chance to please them. He ended up making "pretzels" and they loved them and were their new favorites!

Summary- A little boy is looking for his cat but all he finds are lions, tigers, and cheetahs. He says "This is NOT my cat!" throughout the entire story. (good use of repetition keeps the children engaged) At the end of the story he find his cat.

Your's Truly, Goldilocks by Alma Florodo

Traditional Literature, Picture Book
Summary- The three little pigs are having a party and the big bad wolf comes and crashes it because he wasn't invited. Throughout the story letters are sent to all the guest, which are characters from other well-known tales.
Letter-writing in the class could be a great activity used from this book.

The Wall by Even Bunting

Historical Fiction, Picture Book
Sumary- This is about a little boy and his father who go visit a wall to honor the soldiers in Vietnam. These soldiers had passed away in the War. They search on the wall for the little boy's grandfather's name. It is sad for the grandson who see's other children with their grandfather's. It reminds him of times they had before he passed away.
Good way to talk about death in a family and relate to children.

When I Was Little by Jamie Lee Curtis

Summary- This story is about a little who talks about all her experiences as a little girl and how she grew up and does new things now.
Easy book to relate to children.

Miss Nelson is Missing by James Marshall

Summar- When Miss Nelson didn't come to school the class got a new teacher, whose name was Mrs. Swamp. She was so strict and the children listened and did everything they were supposed to do. The children realized they missed their old teacher and the way she ran the classroom. They ended up looking for Mrs. Nelson and thought of all the places where she could be and came up with crazy ideas in their creative imaginations. Miss Nelson came back and the children were well-behaved. The children don't know this but she was Mrs. Swamp.
Theme- Sometimes you have to teach children the hard way to get what you want in the classrooom.

Summary-David is a student who gets in trouble and always seems to be doing the wrong things at the wrong time.
This is a very realistic book that will get  children to relate to their lives.

Countdown to Kindergarten by Alison Mghee

Summary- A little girl is going into kindergarten and heard rumors that there were 3 rules. She didn't know how to tie her shoes and tried everything to get rid of her shoes so she didn't have to wear them. She found out that kindergarten wasn't what she thought it would be and had nothing to be afraid of.
Theme-Sometimes you can't listen to rumors, you need to see for yourself!

Abigail Spells by Anna Alter

Realistic Fiction, Picture Book
Summary- Abigail and George were bestfriends and Abigail was the best speller. She entered the spelling bee but messed up on the word "elephant". George tried everything he could to make her feel better. He told her a story about her life and it worked, because she realized she has to let this go. She was still a great speller.
Theme-Just because things go bad one time doesn't mean they will be bad forever.

Mrs. Mack by Patricia Polacco

Summary-Pat loved to rude horses and was sent to Dogspatch with Mrs. Mack to learn how. She was a natural and she longed to ride the one horse named Penny but she had to ride the others first. Donnie and Nancy were mean to her at first but then they became nice when they realized how good she was with the horses. Hap was a quiet man but helped them save Penny. Pat grew to love all the horses and people in Dogspatch.

The World of Pooh:The Complete Winnie-the-Pooh and the House at Pooh Corner by A.A. Milne

Summary- The book has all the different classic stories of Winnie-the-Pooh and his friends Piglet, Tigger, Christopher Robin, Eeyore, and more. It talks about all their adventures from Eeyore's birthday, the norht-pole, when Piglet meets a Hefflelump, when pooh makes a new house for Eeyore and more. This is the complete tales and good to have in your classroom library for the faster reader.
Great Book!

Summary- When the employees at a Macy's department store in New York City are homesick because they are immigrants, Milly inspires the store to have the first Macy's Parade during Christmas time.

Summary- This is a rhyming book that talks about a little boy who thinks of all the possibilities for future jobs such as bow licker, paper plane folder, gift unwrapper, puddle stomper, bubble gum popper, etc.
This book has very good pictures and is a quick and easy read.

Summary- Joey has trouble paying attention and controlling his mood swings. When his medicines wear off and he starts acting weird. His teacher and mother are disappointed.

Summary- 10 year old Jewish girl named Sally likes to make up stories in her head. Her family moves from New Jersey to Miami Beach. This is at the end of WWII. Her brother caught nephritis, and when they are on the way Sally meets a black family and learns about racial segregation. Meets Mr. Zavodsky thinks he is Hitler and Sally thinks her dad will die at age 42 because his brothers did. She goes through a lot and they all move to Jersey.

She kisses Davy at a Halloween party through her mask and she is told to stay home until she learns to behave. Her curiosity gets her in a lot of trouble.

The wizard shows up turning everyone back to normal. He leaves town and turns himself into the little boy and sneak into the church while everyone's asleep. The town enjoys Christmas and the father returns.

Summary- Three Chinese sisters stay home alone and a wolf who is hungry acts as if he is their grandmother and tries to danger them.
Good way to show how their are different versions to certain traditional literature stories.

Summary- A bully named Eugene likes birds and the principal, Mr. Lincoln, uses this to help Eugene overcome his tolerance.
Great for addressing bullying in the classroom, and show bullies other interests.

Summar- Mei Mei learns two different languages and gets help from her teacher. Mei Mei moved from Hong Kong to New York and she learns English but does not want to forget her Chinese roots.
This book is great for ESL students.

Rachel and Grisha lived in Russia. The Jewish people lived there and world and told stories and drew pictures. Grisha needed a new coat but wouldn't receive one. The Coassacks would come and go after the Jews one day. They set off for America and Grisha needed a new coat to get through Ellis Island but wouldn't because his mother who died made it. They made it through inspection and were all together.

Summary- A girl named Anna needed a new coat but stores were empty from the war. Her and her mother would her grandmother's gold for wool. They gave a lamp for yarn, used berries for a red dye, gave the yard to the weaver and gave her a necklace in return. Gave a teapot for the tailor and invited everyone over for Christmas to thank them for helping with the coat. Anna visited the sheep after it was all over.

Summary- A girl who lived in the mountains told about what she did throughout the day with her grandmother., her grandfather, and cousin Peter. They pumped pails of water to have warm bath water. Stood around back stove and waited for cocoa. She never wanted to leave the mountain. (Mr. and Mrs. Crawford for butter and they smelled of milk)

The Butterfly by Patricia Polacco

Summary- Monique lived in a small village that was undergoing a war. It was invaded by Nazi troop. Pinouff was her pet cat. Monsieur Marks or also known as Candy Man was taken away by the Nazi troops. Sevrine and her family lived under Monique's house and were hiding out for years. The two families fled from the village. The train left without Marcel (Monique's mother). Butterflies covered the village, they were safe and it was a sign.

The Lemonade Club by Patricia Polacco

Realistic Fiction Picture book
Summary-Tracy and Marilyn are best friends and Miss Weichelman was their 5th grade teacher. They had a class pet which was a guinea pig named Pinky. Their teacher taught them that they could be whatever they dreamed to be. There were some mean girls in the class that picked on Marilyn for being fat. Marylin collapsed and couldn't breath and they found out she had cancer (leukemia). Miss Weichelman wanted her to be at her wedding. All the children wore funny hats on their heads so Marylin felt better and their teacher shaved her head. But what the children didn't know was that their teacher had breast cancer. The girls pushed her to become a doctor and fulfill her dreams.
Theme- Explains how you should push through bad times and hope for the best.

The Mitten:A Ukranian Folktale by Jan Brett

Traditional Literature, Picture Book
Summary- Nicki wanted white mittens, but Baba didn't want him to lose them in the white snow. She made them anyway and he dropped a mitten and a mole climbed in it. Then a rabbit, hedgehog, owl, badger, fox and mouse all crammed in the mitten. The did this because they were afraid of one another.
Each picture showed the next animal that would join them in the mitten. The bear sneezed from the mouses whiskers and the animals all flew out.
Nicki found his mitten on the way home and Baba was happy.

First Strawberries by Joseph Bruchac

Multicultural, Picture Book
Summary- This book is about a cherokee woman and a man who got into an argument and she left him. He chased her for a long time. The sun helped him and grew him many berries along her path but she didn't stop. Finally she stopped for the strawberries and the man caught up with her. They would be together and not fight again. The sweetness from the strawberries made them happy.
Theme- You don't realize what you have until it's gone.

Anansi and the Moss-Covered Rock by Eric A. Kimmel

Traditional Literature, Picture Book
Anansi is a spider and she asks the lion to go for a walk with him in the forest. If anyone says "isn't this a strange moss-covered rock" it would make them pass out. Anansi stole the lions yams and did the same thing to the elephant, rhino, hippo, giraffe, zebra and so on. The little bush deer wanted him to learn his lesson and he acted as if he didn't know what would happen. But Little Bush Deer played the trick on him. She had all the animals take back their food and Anansi still didn't learn his lesson because he still does tricks to this day.
Theme- Not to steal, but he did and didn't learn his lesson

Summary- This is about a girl who her grandma and her always watch the stars and one day her and her brother went to America to see their family and it took a long time to get there. The girl was said when she couldn't see the stars on the boat. The woman who was taking care of them on the boat passed away and the 10 year old brother had to take of her. They landed in America and found their family and that night she went to bed early to watch the stars and grandma read to her.

Alphabet City by Stephen T. Johnson

Alphabet Picture Book
Summary- This book is just picture, it shows how you can see different letters all around your city. The images are very good and it doesn't exactly say the letter so the child will need to look at the picture and figure out which letter it looks like.
This is a great book for young children who are still learning their ABC's.

Take Me Out of the Bathtub by Alan Katz

Poetry Picture Book
Summary- This book is full of poems and songs. These poems are funny and will make the children laugh and want to pay attention. Many of the poems go to the tune of well-known children songs, so the children will be able to relate to them.
There are many different uses for this book!

On Market Street by Anita and Arnold Lobel

The narrator takes a trip to a market and buys many things. All which make up the letters of the alphabet. The pictures are of the woman covered in that object. For example, D for donuts. Everything she bought from the market she bought as presents for her friends.

This book has great pictures and you could use if for a historical or social studies perspective because it teaches the reader about important facts. Some of the topics in this story are presidents, places, inventions, etc.
Rhyming book! Helps children memorize better and get engaged.

The Z was Zapped by Chris Van Allsburg

Alphabet Picture Book
This book had a different descriptive word for each letter of the alphabet.
The reader can guess what the next letter will look like.
I think the pictures were fun and it is a good way for children to memorize the alphabet because the descriptor started with the same letter as the letter.

Junie B. Jones and the Stupid Smelly Bus by Barbara Park

Realistic Fiction, Chapter Book
Junie B. Jones was getting ready to start kindergarten and had to ride the bus. When she got on it a girl with curly black hair didn't want her to sit with her. Jim was a mean boy she didn't like. Mrs. gave the new children a tour of the school and Junie B. made friends with Lucille. She loves the library and loved to read. She didn't want to ride the bus home so she hid in the supply closet, cafeteria, nurses office, but then she had to use the bathroom. They called 911 and everyone showed up, she made it to the bathroom but she got in trouble. She was happier to ride the bus the next day because Grace would be there.
Junie B. was the narrator of this book and it was funny!

Henry's Freedom Box by Ellen Levine

This is about the Underground Railroad
Henry was a slave, he lost his family but married Nancy and had two children with her. He wanted to be free like a bird. His master eventually became ill and sent him to work for his son. Then he lost Nancy and the kids. Dr. Smith was a white man who thought slavery was wrong and sent him to America in Philadelphia, Pa to a friends house. He was now free and got a birthday and a middle name Henry fought for freedom.
Theme- Fight for what you believe in!

To Market, To Market by Anne Miranda

Summary- The lady in this story keeps returning to the market to buy animals, but every time she returns something goes wrong with the other animals. She is fed up with this and takes the animals to the store and buys items to cook everyone vegetable soup.
Rhyming book, keeps children engaged!

The Frog Prince Continued by Jon Scieska

Traditional Literature, Picture book
The prince and princess were unhappy and the prince wanted to be a frog again. He went to look for help and ran into 3 witches who were from different fairy tales and would have harmed him. The fairy godmother turned him into a carriage. He realized he wasn't happy this way and would be happier with the princess. He went home and kissed the princess and they both turned back into frogs.
Theme- It doesn't matter what you look like as long as your with someone that makes you happy

The Three Pigs by David Wesner

Traditional Literature, Picture book
Plot- The first pig built a house of of straw and the wold knocked it down. The second pig made his house out of sticks and the wolf blew it down and ate that pig as well as the first. The third pig got smart and made his house out of bricks. (repetition)
Summary- In this particular version of the three little pigs they jump out of the book and the characters talk about how they got away from the wolf. The pigs made paper airplanes out of the book and crashed. They jumped into other stories such as "hey diddle diddle" They left that story and entered into a dragon story and the pigs saved the dragon so in return the dragon saved the pigs from the wolf because he protected their house and the wolf couldn't blow it down.

Owl Moon by Jane Yolen

Realistic Fiction, Picture book
The main character was a little boy and him and Pa went "owling".
This is when you would go into the cold winter forest and hoot like a Great Horned Owl. They had to be silent and just hope the owl's would call back to them. The child was like a shadow to his grandpa. They found an owl in a branch with a flashlight and they stared at one another through the night.

Jessie was a girl who lived with her grandmother and her cow-Ms. Minnie

Jessie's parents passed away. Rabbi's brother Mortecai died and he would choose someone to go to America. Villagers begged him to let them go but he chose Jessie. She had her mother's wedding band but forgot it. As she traveled she missed her grandmother dearly. Miss Almond sewed on a heart pocket on her tattered coat.
Jessie met a boy names Lou. His father was a shoemaker and her cousin Kay greeted her when she got off the ship. Jessie sewed for her money and enjoyed living in New York and wrote letters to her grandma. In New York she began school to learn English and eventually sent a ticket home to her grandma to come to America to be with her. Her grandmother gave her the wedding ring and she would marry Lou.
Good moral to this story- always go after what you believe

Clementine by Sara Pennypacker

Chapter book, Realistic Fiction
Clementine never payed attention to what was going on. She was always focused on other things which always got her in trouble. Her best friend was Margaret and they always got in trouble together. Clementine had a little brother who she always called names of vegetables. In the story she cuts off Margaret's hair but only to help her. She used her mothers permanent markers to try to cover it up. She had a cat named Polka Dottie but now she has a new cat and her name was moisturizer. Throughout the story Clementine always says "okay, fine."
Principal Rice always yelled at her. She had some good days and some bad days. She loves to draw and was known as the "HARD ONE" in school. She would always try to help people but it always turned out bad.
Setting: Apartment building, basement
Theme- Sometimes you need to pay attention to detail or things can turn out bad

Make Way for Ducklings by Robert McCloskey

Fantasy Picture book
Mr. and Mrs. Mallard were searching for a place to live but the Mrs. was never satisfied. The Public Garden didn't have much food at first but people began to feed them peanuts. The nice policeman, Michael was the most friendly with them. They were stuck near water and couldn't fly. Mrs. Mallard had 8 babies and their eggs hatched on that island. The children's names were Jack, Kack, Lack, Mack, Nack, Ouack, Pack, and Quack. Mr. Mallard raised the children and they wouldn't stop traffic in town for the ducks other than the policeman.
Theme- You might not be in the best situation but you have to make the best of it.

Owen by Kevin Henkes

Fantasy Picture book
Owen is a mouse who carried his blanket everywhere he went. His mother wanted to get rid of it before he started school, so he didn't get made fun of.
Mrs. Tweezer told Owen's mother to throw it away, but she had a better idea. She turned the blanket into a handkerchief.
I think the images go well with this story and it showed that parents can make everything better when you think they will get worse.

The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter

This is a traditional literature picture book.
Characters-Flopsy, Mopsy, Peter, Cotton-Tail, Mr. McGregor
Summary: The three rabbits were very well behaved except for Peter. He is bad and never follows the rules. Peter stole from Mr. McGregor's garden and was chased away by him. Peters' clothes had to come off as he was running away to safety because he got caught on something. Mr. McGregor used Peters' clothes to make a scarecrow. Peter felt sick from eating alot of the vegetables from the garden, so he didn't get to eat supper with the other rabbits.
Theme- Don't steal, because nothing good comes from it. Peter learned his lesson and will never steal again.
